California, here we come!

This is some (hopefully) helpful travel information.

Links to maps will take to you Google maps, which you can print along with the directions. We will have hard copies of the maps to the restaurants available for you in Riverside.

Maps on this page are interactive, so you can zoom in or out or whatever you want. In fact, you’ll probably need to in order to see both the starting and ending points. The Google team has also driven down the Riverside roads (but not the UCR campus) with their cameras on, so you can see real pictures of what the streets and buildings look like. Just switch over to satellite view and keep zooming in until you see pale yellow lines on the streets. Then use the mouse to drag the little yellow man down into the street. The view will go to street level and you can walk along the streets with him. Use the controls on the left to look up or down, look right or left. Follow the white arrows on the pale yellow lines to move along the streets. Or, use your mouse to drag the man where you want him. This works best on a high speed connection!

Since most of us are staying at the Marriott, all of the maps use that as a starting or ending point. The Comfort is right next door, though.

Just below this is a link that will take you to the Google map with driving directions. You may also want to check the hotels’ sites, since there may be alternate surface streets that are more practical if you are getting in at a busy time of day.

After a few days in the California sun, here’s how you go back to the Ontario airport.

If you are not planning on renting a car, here is the number (1-800-700-1983) and website for SuperShuttle. Taxis are also a possibility, but will be expensive ($40 or so each way). If you come up with a neat travel alternative, please share!

From 9:00am to 12:00 noon, we will have the NAJVS business meeting on the UCR campus, in the Tomas Rivera Library, room 403. This room is adjacent to Special Collections and Archives where the Eaton Collection is housed and where the Science Fiction Studies (SFS) Seminar will take place later that day. Here is a campus map that you can print and here is one that is interactive. The building itself is number 322, abbreviated RIVL, on this map, near the center of campus.

Please be sure to double check the Eaton program for any changes. But as it stands right now, at 2:00 in the Special Collections and Archives Reading Room, is the SFS Symposium. The Reading Room is located in the Tomas Rivera Library, on the 4th floor. Here is a campus map that you can print and here is one that is interactive. On this map, the building itself is number 322, abbreviated RIVL, on this map, near the center of campus. Other maps may use a different number.

A note about transportation: All of the details about transportation in the morning are still being worked out. We will update you as soon as we know more. Generally speaking, it is about 2 miles, and you should have received an email from Sarah asking whether you needed transportation that afternoon to the SFS events. Please let her know if you do. If you have no idea what we are talking about, email Julia, Henry, Dennis, Terry, Jean-Michel or somebody else who is going asap.
