The following list is selective. Many of Verne’s novels have been recorded, but most audio versions use public domain, Victorian-era translations that are not always noted for their accuracy or completeness. For that reason, the list is divided into two parts: the first includes audiobooks that are based on recent, complete translations; the second includes additional titles that use older translations that are considered “respectable.” In both lists, the books are arranged in chronological order of the French publication.

Walter, a longtime member of NAJVS, made no secret of the fact that he considered his later translation of the novel, published by SUNY Press in 2010, to be superior to this earlier effort. (It’s part of his Amazing Journeys anthology.) Until that version is available in audio, this is the best of the many readings of this version on the market.

Audiobooks using Older Translations
There are dozens if not hundreds of Verne audiobooks using older translations. The economics of the audiobook industry are such that classics are almost always based on public domain texts, and with Verne that can be a problem. Titles included may be included here for a number of reasons:
- The translation, while older, is generally considered a reliable one, and the narration is good.
- The translation may not be the highest-rated among those available, but possesses some redeeming characteristics—and the narration is good.
- The translation may be the only public domain version available, and while it may be flawed, the narration is good and it conveys enough of a sense of the novel to be worth a listen.

The Mysterious Island
Translated by Stephen White, narrated by Jonathan Keeble. SNR Audio, 2025.The Stephen White translation of this novel is sometimes downgraded because it’s somewhat condensed, omitting about 10% of Verne’s original text. Unlike the more widely available translation by WHG Kingston, White retains the original names of the characters, and he also provides an accurate rendering of Nemo’s life story. (Kingston rewrote that chapter to make the British imperialists honorable and beneficent, and the Sepoy patriots evil and misguided—exactly the opposite of Verne’s intentions.)

SNR Audio, 2024.This is another slightly abridged translation; in this case it’s included because it’s the only public domain translation available in English, and more recent translations have not been recorded. The text, taken from the Vincent Parke edition of 1901, reduces the 21 chapters of Verne’s original novel to 19, omitting some of the cultural and “travelogue” material, but is otherwise faithful to the story.
